International leather fair begins today
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The India International Leather Fair, being organised jointly by the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and the Council for Leather Exports (CLE), will begin on January 31 at the Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam.
Talking to journalists about the four-day event, Rajiv Yadav, Executive Director, ITPO, recalled that last year, the fair attracted 400 participants. This year 393 were expected. Talking about the leather sector, Mr.Yadav said: “Response from the industry shows that the Indian leather sector is on a strong footing.” This year, some of the non-traditional countries had agreed to participate in the fair. Habib Hussain, chairman, CLE, said that in the first six months of last year, business was good. During September and October the industry witnessed decline. Creating more infrastructure, preparing long-term policies and providing term loans to those who lost foreign exchange due to recession were some of the recommendations made by the CLE, which had been submitted to the government, he added.
