Forgettable day for Indian players

NEW DELHI: K. Sasikiran, Abhijeet Gupta and D. Harika crashed to 11th-round defeats in the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee on Friday.

With two rounds to go, Abhijeet and Harika have slipped to the joint sixth spot. Sasikiran, the top seed in Group ‘B’ finds himself alone in the last spot.

Sasikiran (three points) suffered his third defeat in a row by surrendering in 44 moves to Italian Fabiano Caruana.

Nigel Short (7.5) continues to lead after thrashing David Navara in just 27 moves.

Abhijeet gave up when he was a move away from being checkmated by Dutchman Roeland Pruijssers in just 30 moves of Kings Indian.

Facing local talent Friso Nijboer, Harika underestimated her rival’s queenside play and paid the penalty.

In Group ‘A’, Leinier Dominguez Perez, Levon Aronian and Sergei Movsesian are in the lead with 6.5 points.
