Riviera 2009 on in full swing at VIT in Vellore.

VELLORE: There was an air of genial frenzy that ran high on Saturday — the second day of Riviera, the four-day cultural and sports fest of the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT University).

Friendly greetings filled the campus, as the students walked around with a handful of goodies won at the events and broad grins after catching up with long-lost friends.

It also became a day of digging out new talents. Krithika K. never knew Aparna Mukherjee, her best friend for four years, competent at salsa. So did Rathnakumar from Madurai, who spotted his schoolmate Karthikeyan, and was surprised to see him as a drummer.

The preliminary round of ‘Frisk factor,’ the dance event, filled the early part of the day, as the participants danced their way to get their names stamped on the final list.

Creative minds were given a thorough workout at ‘Junkyard architecture’ and ‘Soap up,’ in which the participants carved out mammoth figures on scented soaps and junk materials. ‘Junkyard architecture’ triggered the creative minds of the students with a queer theme: designing a transport vehicle that can compete with the Wright brothers’ historic flight. From super-fast submarines to gravity-defying planes, the students shaped their ideas on thermo-col sheets. “It’s amazing to see students creating art out of waste. Every model is backed with a science principle,” said Rebecca Williams from Students Partnership Worldwide, an NGO, who judged the event.

With no ceremonial pomp, the finals of ‘Style Check’ and ‘Frisk factor’ kicked off in the evening. Actor Namitha and former Miss India 2006 contestant Niyati Joshi judged the participants on their ramp-walking skills.

At the ‘Frisk factor’ event, the dance floor sizzled with foot-tapping numbers and fast-flying performances, making the crowd to leap to its feet in euphoria.

A dance team from Chennai drew resounding ‘ahhs’ for its creative choreography. The stage was filled with perpendicular lines of dancers, who moved in unison at gracefully rapid paces. The lead pair swirled in swift motions, as the dancers wound around them in myriad shapes for a stylish narration of the mythology. An all-girl troupe, top-to-toe in glittery blue outfits, stood out for its adept footwork. Even as the participants took their curtain calls, all the action took place off stage. The girls paired up with their buddies to mirror the dance moves performed on stage. Guys, meanwhile, untiringly waved their hands at the celebrity judges.

Shuffled between the two shows was the incredibly executed acrobatics stunt show by ‘Efekt Crew’ from Romania.
