School carnival off to a colourful start

CHENNAI: Two children, studying in UKG and class I, had the audience tapping and clapping through their 10-minute performance on the drums that towered over them. At regular intervals, P. Sannath, the older of the two siblings, confidently urged the audience to clap as the beats reached a crescendo.

The impressed teachers began clapping and swaying to the drumbeats.

Samarth and Sannath have been learning to play the drums from their father N.S.Parameswaran, who is with Wipro Technologies. “Samarth has given 32 such programmes and participates in the corporate cultural events,” the proud father proclaimed. Their performance was part of a games carnival titled ‘Reward Excellence and Achievement Project’ (REAP), organised by the Parents-Teachers Association of Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School, K.K. Nagar.

REAP is aimed at encouraging children to learn while they play. In some stalls at the event, the children, even the younger ones, queued up and waited their turn to play.

At the same venue, a career carnival was also organised by the school in association with SRM University. The stalls there gave details about a range of career options, including cosmetology, defence services, ‘cinema - the cutting edge art’, multimedia and robotics.

Some youngsters were interested in learning more about the defence forces. S. Suryanarayanan of class VI, who came with his mother and uncle, picked up a poster of army men from a stall.

“I will get approval from my father showing this,” he said, when asked if he was interested in joining the Army.

School principal Indira Vaidhyanathan said the career carnival was held to ensure that the students do not confine their choices to engineering and medicine.

The carnival was inaugurated by R.Subramanian, managing director of Subhiksha Trading Services, who is an alumnus of the school.

Mrs.Y.G.Parthasarathy, Dean and Director of PSBB Group of Schools and P.Sathyanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor of SRM University, spoke.
