Two of the winners, Cherian (above 65 singles) and Vivek Reddy (right, above-45 singles & doubles), in the T.S. Santhanam memorial National veteran’s tennis tournament with N. Sankar (second from left), chairman, Sanmar Group and Ram Santhanam, chairman and Managing Director, Wheels India.

CHENNAI: Showing his athletic abilities and shot-making prowess in equal measure, Tamil Nadu’s Vivek Reddy outlasted Statemate C. Jasper 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the above-45 singles final of the T.S. Santhanam Memorial National veterans’ tennis tournament at the Mylapore Club, here on Saturday.

Earlier, Vivek, partnering Jasper, clinched the above-45 doubles title with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the Tamil Nadu duo of Raja Ram and Karthik Kailash.

In the above-45 singles summit clash, Jasper used his wrist effectively for placements — his sense of angles was the high-point of the match — to garner points, while Vivek, a compact player, blended aggression with fine retrieving abilities.

N. Sankar, Chairman, Sanmar Group, gave away the prizes.

Pune FC in last four

Pune FC progressed to the semifinals of the Don Bosco-Fr. McFerran Trophy football tournament on Saturday, winning a shootout 3-0 against Chennai Customs after the match had ended one-all.
