NEW DELHI: K. Sasikiran and Abhijeet Gupta salvaged some pride by scoring comfortable victories in the 12th and penultimate round of the Corus chess championship but D. Harika lost at Wijk aan Zee, near Amsterdam, on Saturday. In Group ‘B’, Sasikiran easily defeated Dutchman Jan Werle with white pieces in just 23 moves and moved up to the joint 12th place with four points. Werle slipped to the last position in the 14-player field with 3.5 points. In Group ‘C’, Abhijeet did not have to stretch too much to beat Venezuala’s Eduardo Iturrizaga in 43 moves. Abhijeet is now fifth with 6.5 points. Armed with black pieces, Harika played rather passively against last-man Oleg Rominishin and lost in 78 moves of Slav Defence. Harika is tied seventh at 5.5 points. In Group ‘A’, six players — Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, Sergey Karjakin, Teimour Radjabov, Sergei Movsesian and Leinier Dominguez Perez — shared the lead with seven points each.
