Trees cut on district court premises

Depleting green cover: A worker cutting down the branches of a tree on the district court premises on Sunday.

KOCHI: A few trees on the district court premises were cut down on Sunday as they “posed a threat to life and property”.

The Public Works Department had auctioned nine trees that were located inside the district court premises stating that the trees were posing danger to the court complex.

K.U. Abdul Kareem of Munambam bagged the contract for cutting down the trees for Rs.4,500 from the department.

Officials of the Social Forestry Wing of the Forest Department, when contacted, said that permission was issued to cut down the trees as they posed danger to life and property.

The Forest officials had earlier inspected the place before issuing permission for cutting them, officials said.

However, the Corporation authorities said that the clearance of the Kochi Corporation was not sought in the case. According to E.M. Sunilkumar, chairman of the Town Planning Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation, the civic body was not informed about the decision. Earlier, the corporation had intervened to prevent the axing of a tree at Palarivattom which was cleared by the Social Forestry Wing, he said.

The Town Planning Committee will take up the issue with the authorities concerned, he said.
