Reverse osmosis treatment plants at three places
Shyam Ranganathan
CHENNAI: Effluent treatment plants with advanced reverse osmosis technology will be set up, with government support, at three places in Tamil Nadu.
At a recent meeting, the Centre had agreed to provide Rs.90 crore under the Indian Leather Development Programme, M. Rafeeque Ahmed, president, All India Skins and Hides Tanners and Merchants Association, said. The funds would cover part of the cost of Rs.150 crore required to set up Common Effluent Treatment Plants with advanced technology.
Under the plan, aimed at tapping the efficient reverse osmosis technology to avoid pollution of water sources, 60 per cent of the cost will be borne by the Centre, 15 per cent by the State and the rest by owners of the leather units. This will help the leather industry meet stringent norms on Total Dissolved Solids allowed in effluents , Asit Baran Mandal, director, Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), said.
