Sri Lankan offensive

Sri Lanka’s offensive against the LTTE, branded a terrorist organisation by almost all nations including India, is the culmination of a long-drawn battle against terrorism. The final push should complete the LTTE’s elimination. Except for some fringe elements in Tamil Nadu which have vested interests, everyone knows there is a vast difference between the Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka and V. Prabakaran’s terrorist outfit. The only alternative for the LTTE is to lay down arms and come for talks with the Sri Lankan government.

K. Venkataraman,

Mumbai

Eliminating the LTTE will not automatically guarantee peace in Sri Lanka. The Tamil community the world over is waiting to see what steps Colombo and New Delhi propose to take to resolve the ethnic issue in the island nation. The Indian government should ensure that Sri Lanka implements the devolution package, it does not go back to its old ways, and that the Tamils get equal rights.

Sampath Kumar Swaminathan,

New York
