Amar Singh to hold talks with Karat

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh is scheduled to meet CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Wednesday to look at fresh political realignments to counter the BSP in Uttar Pradesh.

On Monday, Mr. Singh called on Home Minister P. Chidambaram and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee but declined to divulge the issues discussed. The SP has been negotiating with the Congress for a seat sharing arrangement in U.P.

Mr. Singh said he had called on CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan and talked to Mr. Karat also.

The SP’s move comes in the wake of the BSP’s decision to not have any electoral pact with the Left, which had sought to project her as the leader of the third front it proposed to float after withdrawing support to the UPA government on the nuclear deal issue.
