dated February 3, 1959: Evolutionary changes

One of the basic axioms of modern genetics — the “individuality” of the gene — has been challenged, the New York Times reported on February 2. The newspaper said in a Washington dispatch that, for the first time in a half century of genetics research, a case had been discovered where the gene, an element of the germ plasm, did not follow the rule of individuality in passing on its characteristics to succeeding generations. The discovery came in a research project sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The New York Times said the Foundation commented that the discovery “may well turn out to be among the most significant basic discoveries of genetics.”
