PALANI: The ten-day Thai Poosam festival has commenced with ‘dwajarohanam,’ hoisting of temple flag, at Sri Periya Nayaki Amman Temple in the town on Monday. Hundreds of devotees witnessed the flag hoisting ceremony. The ceremony commenced at an auspicious time with special ‘yagam’ to Lord Vinayagar. After ‘vaasthu pujas’ and sixteen kinds of special ‘abishekams,’ Lord Muthukumaraswamy along with Valli and Devasena were brought to the ‘Kodikatti Mandapam,’ after a small procession in the outer ‘prakaram.’ Special pujas were also performed to ‘Dwajasthambam,’ the flag pole, before flag hoisting ceremony. Amid chanting of hymns and singing of ‘Thevaram’ songs, temple priests hoisted the flag with symbols of holy lance, peacock and cock, weapon and mounts of Lord Muruga. Aesthetically decorated god and goddess were mounted on ‘Pudhuchery Sapparam’ and taken in a procession on four rath streets. The temple elephants led the procession.
