Prakash Karat DINDIGUL: All secular parties should come together on a single platform to create an effective alternative to the Congress-led UPA and the communal, tainted NDA led by the BJP, said Prakash Karat, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) here on Monday. He was addressing a public meeting after releasing a biography of the party’s State secretary N. Varadarajan. The forthcoming Lok Sabha polls will determine what type of government should be at the centre. “If you want to help poor people, to implement pro-people economic policies and have independent foreign policy, we need a common secular platform and all should unite.” He said, “We will ensure that the UPA will not lead the nation in 2009. The policies of the UPA government have made the rich super rich and the poor poorer. Despite global recession and its adverse impact on farmers and workers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had not learnt his lesson. While the US wanted to nationalise banks, Dr. Singh wanted to privatise insurance and banking sectors. He insisted that the Central government extend the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to urban areas as unemployment had increased in urban areas. All sections of people must join together and fight against unemployment and insist that the Centre invest more in the public sector. That alone would ensure jobs and livelihood of people. Expressing grave concern over three crore tonnes of grains lying unutilised in FCI godowns, he demanded that this be released immediately to States for strengthening the public distribution system. At present, the PDS was not strong in States as it was being managed with only State funds. Hitting hard at the BJP, Mr. Karat, citing violent incidents against minorities and attacks on churches in Karnataka, said that this was the type of rule the BJP could offer to people.
