In recognition of prompt implementation of welfare schemes

PUDUKOTTAI: The town panchayat of Alankudi near here has bagged a certificate in recognition of its prompt implementation of the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumlarchi Thittam for 2007-08.

The town panchayat of Annavasal has been selected as the best local body for the execution of the solid waste management programme during the same period.

The Alankudi town panchayat had executed 13 works at a total outlay of about Rs.57 lakh. All the works were executed within the scheduled period, eliminating any cost over-run or time over-run.

Further, the works ensured both quality and utility-value. The provision of drinking water at Kalaignar Colony at an outlay of Rs.6.15 lakh, for instance, conceded the felt demand of the residents.

To protect a road and a tank, the town panchayats had constructed retaining walls at an expenditure of Rs.18.15 lakh, the Collector Reeta Harish Thakkar, said at a function to felicitate the town panchayat presidents and the officials held here on Tuesday.

The Collector also said that the Annavasal town panchayat had not only implemented the solid waste management programme successfully on its sprawling two acre compost yard, but also sensitised the masses to the segregation of waste materials at source into degradable and non-degradable garbage.

“Recycling of the plastic waste materials was the major achievement of the town panchayat,” the Collector said, adding that the local body earned a monthly revenue of Rs.10,000 by recycling the plastic wastes. The effort also proved a safe measure to prevent environmental and soil pollution. By generating employment opportunities to the women members of about 25 self-help groups, the town panchayat handled 3.5 tonnes of garbage every month. The bio-compost fetched an assured income to the SHGs.

The Assistant Director of Town Panchayats, V. Tiruvenkadam, said that the supply of drinking water to uncovered areas was the highlight of the achievement of the Alankudi town panchayat, which drilled deep bore-wells at a few places, including Kalaignar Colony.

The Collector handed over a certificate issued by the Commissioner of Town Panchayats K. Gopal, to the town panchayat presidents of Alankudi and Annavasal Suresh and A. Prabha respectively. The Executive Officers of the Town Panchayats N. Kandasamy and M. Vasudevan explained the co-operation extended by the people for the successful implementation of the programmes.
