Villupuram TNSTC to emulate ‘hop-on-hop-off’

“Sight-seeing tours covering 17 spots in Chennai to be introduced soon”

CHENNAI: On the lines of the Chennai-Mamallapuram sight-seeing tour, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Villupuram division is planning to introduce sight-seeing bus tours covering 17 tourist spots in Chennai shortly.

Around four air-conditioned 18-seater mini-buses will be inducted for this purpose. The first bus will start at 8 a.m. and halt at 17 tourist important destinations. The passengers can alight or enter the bus at any point of their choice any number of times. They will be charged Rs.250 per person. The last bus will leave at 8 p.m. in the evening.

According to itinerary, the bus will start from the Madras High Court and stop at Fort St. George, Marina Beach, Parthasarathy Temple, Vivekananda Illam, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Sai Baba Temple in Mylapore, Elliot’s Beach, Theosophical Society, Asthalakshmi Temple, Tidel Park, Guindy National Park, Panagal Park, Valluvar Kottam, Egmore Museum, Fort Museum and Ripon Building.

“The idea to launch the sight-seeing tour was mooted a year ago. Since the Metropolitan Transport Corporation was facing financial difficulties at that time, they asked us to go ahead. We have purchased four mini-buses and are now customising it for the city tour. Hence, we have not finalised the dates for trial runs,” C. Parasivam, TNSTC Villupuram Managing Director told The Hindu.

TNSTC Villupuram Co-ordinator R. Ananthapadmanabhan said they were not competing with other State Transport Corporations. “We are just trying to help tourists see all important places in a day. ‘Hop-on-hop-off’ tours are famous abroad.”

Mr. Parasivam said that each coach would have a TV and a guide. Besides, pamphlets would be distributed to the tourists explaining the nearby tourist spots. “We are also planning to start some of the services from the museum as it might not be ideal to start the tour from beach side in the morning,” he added.
