MADURAI: Tamil Nadu chapter of Indian Society of Gastroenterology will conduct its annual conference at Kodaikanal on Saturday and Sunday. Addressing the media here on Tuesday, L. Thayumanavan, Professor and Head, Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Government Rajaji Hospital, and organising president of the conference, said that the objective would be to take the message of gastroenterology to physicians and general practitioners. Two hundred delegates were expected for the conference, he said. A. S. A. Jeganathan, gastroenterologist, GRH, and organising secretary, said that major themes for seminars and panel discussions would be prevention of liver disease, evils of alcoholism and recent advancements in the treatment of liver diseases. Stating that consumption of alcohol in South and South East Asia had hit a high in the recent past, Dr. Thayumanavan said that the evils of alcoholism would be discussed in detail. The conference would have an interesting session to discuss how the recent changes in consumption pattern among children had resulted in fatty liver among them called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH.
