IT official ‘roughed up’ by Navy personnel

Staff Reporter

VISAKHAPATNAM: An Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax was allegedly roughed up by Naval officials on the Beach Road on Tuesday.

According to the police, the Assistant Commissioner of IT Jeevan Lal was coming with his family from Bheemunipatnam to the city in a car around 2.30 p.m.

A Navy bus that was following them hit the car from behind near the School for the Blind at Sagar Nagar.

The car hit the road divider and stopped. The driver of the Navy bus reportedly beat up Mr. Jeevan Lal following an altercation.

The driver Lokesh called INS Kalinga near Bheemunipatnam and informed the Naval officers of the accident. Sensing trouble, the Assistant Commissioner called up the police and informed them of the incident.

“No sooner we reached the accident spot, a Naval official Ravi Kumar and some others came with sticks.

By that time local people were trying to make the Naval staff see reason as they had hit the car from behind and tried to intimidate the victim.

Had we not gone there in time, the victim could have been attacked with sticks and stones,” said Assistant SI MSN Murthy.

CI Ch. Vivekanada, SI Tirupathi Rao and others reached the spot and prevented the situation from going out of control.

The P.M. palem Police took Commander Ravi Kumar, the driver of the Navy bus Lokesh and his assistant into custody on a complaint filed by the victim.

Meanwhile, a Naval spokesman claimed that the car had first hit the divider and stopped which resulted in the Navy bus hitting it. They said that there was no truth in the allegation of the IT official that he was beaten up.
