Probe sought into fire accidents

APCLC seeks steps by managements to implement safety measures

HYDERABAD: The city unit of Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee (APCLC) on Tuesday demanded that the government order a high level inquiry committee to look into recent fire accidents at the Hyderabad Waste Management Project at Dundigal and at S.V.Organics, Jeedimetla.

On the accident at the project managed by Ramky Enviro, a fact-finding committee of the APCLC said the fire broke out in a shed where chemicals were kept and it took the Fire Department around 48 hours to douse the same.

Action against the management and free medical check-up and treatment facilities for local residents apart, the committee wanted initiatives to contain the pollution.

Negligence

The incident at Jeedimetla which involved a reactor and led to the death of two workers was blamed on neglect of government and the management.

Untrained workers

Among others, the fact-finding by the committee cited lack of safety measures, employment of untrained workers at lower wages and corruption on part of various departments.

It also sought a comprehensive inquiry into the accidents that have taken place at Jeedimetla and other places in the last two years and steps to prevent similar ones in future. The government should also take immediate measures to ensure that the managements implement safety measures.
