Letters to the Editor
It is heartening to see the idea of devolution of powers within a united Sri Lanka gaining momentum with the DMK adopting a resolution to this effect. If the Tamil Nadu government has garnered editorial praise for its handling of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue (“Looking forward to full devolution,” Feb. 4), it is entirely attributable to the vast experience and political acumen of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who exercised restraint without getting carried away by the short-sighted approach of a handful of small political groups. G.S. Kumar, Chennai Nishant Bhardwaj, New Delhi C. Suresh, Thrissur The curtains are about to come down on the LTTE as an organisation. That the DMK has come out with a clear stand without mincing words on the Tamils issue is welcome. A few political parties in Tamil Nadu are making all-out efforts to turn the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils into an emotive issue in an attempt to rouse the people’s passions. It is highly irresponsible on their part to make out a case against the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government for their so-called failure to bring about a ceasefire in the island nation. N. Sekar, Salem Chelladurai Williams, Chennai Ninu John, Coimbatore
