Welcome

It is heartening to see the idea of devolution of powers within a united Sri Lanka gaining momentum with the DMK adopting a resolution to this effect. If the Tamil Nadu government has garnered editorial praise for its handling of the Sri Lankan Tamils issue (“Looking forward to full devolution,” Feb. 4), it is entirely attributable to the vast experience and political acumen of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who exercised restraint without getting carried away by the short-sighted approach of a handful of small political groups.

Devolution of power to North and East Sri Lanka is the only way to settle the ethnic issue peacefully. The DMK’s resolution is a step forward in the peace process.

Mr. Karunanidhi’s stand on the Sri Lankan issue is indeed commendable. The LTTE has no legitimate right to take recourse to terrorism in the name of fighting for autonomy for Tamils. Mr. Karunanidhi has done well to state his views clearly on the volatile issue.

The curtains are about to come down on the LTTE as an organisation. That the DMK has come out with a clear stand without mincing words on the Tamils issue is welcome. A few political parties in Tamil Nadu are making all-out efforts to turn the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils into an emotive issue in an attempt to rouse the people’s passions. It is highly irresponsible on their part to make out a case against the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government for their so-called failure to bring about a ceasefire in the island nation.

It is unfortunate that the death of Muthukumar, the youth who immolated himself to protest the killing of Sri Lankan Tamils, is being glorified and there have been attacks on the Ceylon Bank in Chennai and the Sri Lankan Airlines office in Tiruchi. Our politicians should not whip up people’s sentiments to further their agenda. Can we ever forget who was responsible for Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination? Students in Tamil Nadu are losing valuable time because of the indefinite closure of colleges and hostels. Don’t the law-abiding citizens have a right to live in peace?

The Tamil Nadu government should rethink its decision of closing the colleges in the State for an indefinite period. The Sri Lankans, who are in the midst of a civil war, are enjoying themselves (celebrating their Independence Day, enjoying cricket tournaments) and we, in India, are witnessing bandhs and closure of educational institutions fearing violence. What an irony!

Ninu John,
