Letters to the Editor
The photograph of Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami sitting with Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S.Y. Quraishi (Feb. 4) is truly astounding. They give the impression that they stand united. The Hindu’s timely and impartial reporting on the CEC’s recommendation to the President to remove Mr. Chawla may be one of the factors that brought a happy ending to the drama and helped salvage the Election Commission’s credibility. V.K. Sathyavan Nair, Kottayam Col. C.V. Venugopalan (retd.), Palakkad The appeal by political parties to the Election Commission and its officers to stand united is comforting. Their suggestion for a short duration election process is welcome in the public interest. Political parties too need to sink their differences and act together in matters pertaining to the national interest. They should observe the model code of conduct, desist from electoral malpractices and avoid communal overtones as requested by the Commission. B. Suresh Kumar, Coimbatore
