Plan to infuse IT skills into school students

Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI: Bharathidasan University has launched SUITS (School-University-Industry-Tie-up Scheme) to infuse IT skills into school students from standard V to IX through a pedagogical curriculum and recognise them with certificates.

Deeming the initiative a unique development, the Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko hoped it will help address the challenge of converting 90 per cent of students dropping out after school education in the country into human resource. Besides Prof. Ponnavaikko, the 15-member “high-profile” Board of Studies includes the School Education Secretary M. Kutralingam; the Vice-Chancellor of Anna University – Tiruchi, V. Ramachandran; and the Director of Bharathidasan University Technology Park, Gopinath Ganapathy.

The objective is to provide the latest inputs in IT education to students at a young age, enhance their confidence through the certificates, expose them to opportunities in entrepreneurship and promote schools as flexible skill-based training centres imparting employable skills.

The annual fee for each student ranges between Rs. 250 and Rs. 350. The fee covers the costs of application, registration, examination, course materials, notebooks, marks statement and university convocation. The university is prepared to provide and arrange for scholarships for deserving candidates, Prof. Ponnavaikko told reporters on Wednesday.

IECD Director K. Parthasarathy said that any recognised middle, high or secondary school with computer laboratory and sufficient teachers can offer these courses. The IICD and HI-END have expressed eagerness to provide help to establish computer laboratories in schools lacking the facility.

Schools in need of more information can dial any of the following numbers: IECD - 0431- 2421635 / 2331651, IICD – 0431 4030031, and HI-END – 0422 – 2689701, 98427 45039.
