Alcohol policy being drafted

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss on Wednesday said the proposed National Alcohol Policy would be recommendatory in nature.

He was speaking at the Ninth All India Editors Conference on Social Sector Issues, organised by the Press Information Bureau.

The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, Indian Council for Medical Research and the Department of Health were entrusted with the task of drafting the policy. The draft is expected within three to six months.

To address issues

Dr. Ramadoss said the policy would address issues such as timing of the liquor shops, permissible age for drinking, surrogate ads, closure of liquor shops a day after the salaries are disbursed and even over the weekends.

Main problem

Alcoholism was increasing leaps and bounds in the country and was the “mother” of all public health problems. It was also a major problem in developing countries, he pointed out.
