Udhagamandalam: The role of good vision in ensuring safety on roads was emphasised at a programme organised by the Transport and Health Departments here recently. The Regional Transport Officer, K. Mohan Ram, who presided, pointed out that in order to enhance awareness about the importance of vision, the Government was not only conducting camps for the benefit of government and private drivers but also providing spectacles free of charge. Urging the people to make use of such programmes, he said that even those using spectacles should get their eyes examined periodically. The Project Manager, District Blindness Control Society, Amaravathy Rajan, said that often eye defects led to judgment errors which caused accidents. She added that out of 94 drivers who attended the camp 62 had been found to be either in need of spectacles or a change in the power of the glasses they were using now. The Joint Director of Health, Balraj, and the Motor Vehicles Inspector, Rajinikanth, also participated.
