Encouragement: Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan presenting books to a student of Balavidyalaya in Chennai on Wednesday. CHENNAI: More awareness of the facilities available for hearing-impaired children should be created among rural people, Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan said on Wednesday. Participating in the 39th annual day celebrations of Balavidyala here, she said that the government started 31 early detection centres in the State, including two in Chennai. But, parents in rural areas were still not aware of the facilities. The government would soon release advertisements on television channels on facilities available at these centres. She urged Balavidyalaya to help the government in creating awareness, besides monitoring the working of the centres and making valuable suggestions. Appealing to the teachers of the centres to work with dedication, she said that they were the ones who mould clay into beautiful dolls. Ms. Jeevan released a souvenir and distributed memento to volunteers, certificates to teacher trainees of 2007-08, honoured teachers who had completed 10 and 20 years of service, and books and medals to children who were integrated in regular schools in June last year. Saraswathi Narayanaswamy, director of the school, in her welcome address, said that Balavidyalaya was privileged to have been given the responsibility of training the teachers for early detection centres, conduct orientation programmes and refresher courses, monitor the working of the centres and provide help to the centres in procuring teaching aids. Earlier, Valli Annamalai, school principal, read out the annual report.
