NEW DELHI: After inching up for two consecutive weeks, the rate of inflation dropped to 5.07 per cent for the week ended January 24 from 5.64 per cent in the previous week owing to a fall in prices of fruits, vegetables and certain manufactured items such as coffee and khandsari, among food products, and iron and aluminium in metals. Halting the ten-week decline in the price spiral, the Wholesale Price Index-based inflation had moved up to 5.60 per cent for the week ended January 10 and further to 5.64 per cent in the following week. Analysing the WPI data, the Finance Ministry said in a statement that “the rate of price rise has started declining after going up for two weeks primarily on account of the strike by truck operators.” While the sharp drop in inflation during the week ended January 24 was mainly on account of prices of vegetables dipping by 2.7 per cent and fruits by 1.2 per cent. The Finance Ministry also pointed out that textiles as a sub-group were still registering double-digit inflation.
