MADURAI: This year’s Teppam festival of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple promises to be a grand affair with elaborate arrangements under way at the Mariamman Teppakulam here. The festival marks the conclusion of the annual 12-day Thai Poosam festival. The float has been re-designed this year with stapatis from Kumbakonam being brought for the purpose. Rather than the usual design, this year’s ‘teppam’ resembles a house. “Pictures of the deities have been put up on the sides and top of the float. On the inside, the paintings make it appear like a temple,” says K. Rajanayagam, Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, and Executive Officer of the temple. On the top, paintings of ‘Meenakshi Tirukkalyanam,’ ‘Tirukailaya Katchi,’ and ‘Lord Vinayaka with Murugan’ have been put up. The height of the float has also been increased to enable devotees have a better darshan of the deities on the dais inside the float. The teppam festival falls on Sunday (February 8).
