CHENNAI: A man posing as a retired Judge and using a revolving red light on his vehicle was taken into custody by the Chetpet police on Thursday night.
Police said the Commissioner of Police, K. Radhakrishnan, received information that M. Jainul Arif (55) of Dr. T.V. Naidu Street was posing as a retired Judge and using national flag on his vehicle.
He was also in the practice of cheating people.
A special team led by the Kilpauk Deputy Commissioner of Police, M.C. Sarangan, was formed to investigate the complaint. When the team went to Arif’s house, it found the car with the red light and national flag parked there. On seeing the police, the watchman said that the owner had gone abroad.
Even as the police called Arif on his mobile phone, he claimed to be abroad. Suspecting foul play, police entered the house and found the accused hiding on the first floor.
During interrogation, he told police that he indulged in hawala transaction business in Singapore for12 years and came to India.
Unable to repay the loan taken for purchasing the car, he changed its number plate fearing that the financial institution would confiscate the vehicle.
Police seized the car and arrested him.
