Poor state of Welfare hostels draws flak

1,553 hostels lack basic amenities, says Chukka Ramaiah

Social Welfare Minister Subhash Chandra Bose urged to inspect hostels

HYDERABAD: Lack of basic amenities in Social Welfare hostels came in for sharp criticism in the Legislative Council on Thursday even as Social Welfare Minister Subhash Chandra Bose said that the situation was improving gradually.

Chukka Ramaiah (teachers) said that as many as 1,553 social welfare hostels had no toilets, drinking water and students were made to sit on the floor. He suggested that the Minister should go on an inspection to get a first hand account of affairs in the hostels. Another member Paturi Sudhakar Reddy (teachers) said that the budget allocation was not being released till March and as a result there was no time to exhaust the funds allocated for the financial year. Of the Rs.368 crore allocated for development of hostels only Rs.175 crore had been spent up to December. Ch. Sitaramayya (CPI-M) said funds were not released even to dilapidated hostels in Nalgonda. Even Higher Education Minister R. Chenga Reddy was grilled when he said 57 new degree colleges were sanctioned as against seven degrees colleges sanctioned during TDP rule. Mr. Chukka Ramaiah and B. Mohan Reddi said the newly sanctioned colleges neither had faculty nor furniture and the principals had no power to spend funds.
