Ensure Tamils’ safety, India asks Sri Lanka

New Delhi: With the Sri Lankan forces poised to capture the remaining strongholds of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, New Delhi on Thursday asked Colombo to ensure the safety of civilian Tamils caught in the war zone in the north.

External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee also asked the LTTE to allow civilians in the areas held by it to cross over to the safe zones of the government. “We are concerned with the plight of the civilians and have asked them [Colombo] that along with the military exercise against the terrorist organisation LTTE, the government will have to ensure that the life and properties of the civilians are not put in danger,” he told journalists here.

Mr. Mukherjee said Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa had assured him that there would be no shelling in the safe zone. He said the ultimate solution to the ethnic problem lay in devolving powers to the northern and eastern regions as per the 1987 India-Sri Lanka Accord and the 13th amendment to the Sri Lankan Constitution.

Chidambaram unhappy

Home Minister P. Chidambaram said: “We are deeply anguished at the loss of lives. We are not happy that the Sri Lankan government has resumed hostilities. It is for both sides to cease hostilities.” The Home Minister said Sri Lanka must suspend hostilities and LTTE must lay down arms. — PTI
