NEW DELHI: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal on Saturday announced that his government would come up with a separate new “Environment Master Plan”. It has already instituted an environmental impact study of all major development projects, particularly hydro-power projects, to study their impact on the environment and how best to deal with the emerging scenario. Sharing his views at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit 2009 organised by TERI here, Mr. Dhumal, departing from prepared text, said his government was also seriously considering instituting a study on the status of glaciers in the Himalayan region in view of the climatic change challenges. “My government will soon organise a national level seminar on the ‘Status of Glaciers’ with other Himalyan States to discuss the issue threadbare.” The State’s per capita carbon footprint has been assessed at 0.4 tonne in comparison to the national average of 1.05 tonnes.
