5 held for abduction of MLA’s daughter

Staff Correspondent

‘They slapped me and dragged me out of the bus’

MANGALORE: The city police on Saturday arrested five persons in connection with Friday’s alleged abduction of a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy.

N. Satheesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada, said four of those held were from Kasaragod in Kerala and the other was from Mangalore. He gave their names as Raju alias Rajesh, timekeeper of private buses; Ranjith, a mechanic; Arvinda Das, a bus driver; and Satish, a bus conductor, all from Kasaragod, and Prakash, a resident of Mangalore. They are in the 30-35 age group. The timekeeper is believed to have organised the abduction.

The Mangalore South police have registered a case following a complaint from the girl, Shruthi, a Pre-University II year student of St. Aloysius College here. She is the daughter of C.K. Kunhambu, CPI (M) MLA representing Manjeshwar in Kerala.

Shruthi told The Hindu over telephone that three men entered the bus in which she was travelling, at Mahaveer (Pumpwell) Circle and asked her and Shabeeb to get down. “When I refused, they slapped me and dragged me out,” she said.

Mr. Kunhambu told The Hindu that he was not happy with the action taken by the Karnataka government. He alleged that those really behind the incident were not being arrested; the crew of the bus were not rounded up.

CM rushing back

Special Correspondent reports from Nagpur:

Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who is in Nagpur attending the BJP National Council meet, is rushing back to Bangalore following the Mangalore incident.

He told journalists that some “mischievous elements” were behind such incidents and promised that these would end.
