CHENNAI: T. Nagar continues to be an area of concern as unauthorised construction continues. The Chennai Corporation has issued yet another stop-work notice, this time to a ground plus two floor commercial building on Usman road. It was found violating rules and the premises can be sealed, as per the new rules, if the deviated portions are not removed. Corporation sources say there are some more unauthorised constructions in T. Nagar where fresh notices need to be issued under the new rules and fit cases need to be sealed. However, in places such as Anna Nagar such prompt action has not been taken, complain residents, pointing to unauthorised constructions in progress. The ordinance passed by the government condones unauthorised buildings completed before July 2007 from demolition, for a year. The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) issued a notice informing builders and owners that all building violations need to be registered by August 31, 2007 either with the CMDA or the Chennai Corporation. The details of the unauthorised construction and photographic evidence had to be submitted to establish the status of construction as on July 27, 2007 (the cut-off date for condoning unauthorised constructions), failing which “action will be taken if any deviation from or violation of Development Control Rules, regulations or bye-laws is noticed at a later date”, the notice cautioned. Enquiries with the CMDA and Corporation reveal so far, hardly anyone has registered. Details and evidences of unauthorised construction are not available. Without records and proof, it will be difficult to implement the provisions of the ordinance and monitor future violations, says a government official.
