The road between Boys Company and Yellanalli via Aruvankadu railway station, Ubbathalai, Pororai, Kothangatty, Kethorai, Edumakandi, Odyaratty, Mokkatty, Keradakambai, Kekkatty and Ponds Company in Coonoor taluk of the Nilgiris district is in bad shape. This road should be broadened and blacktopped to facilitate easy movement. Hill Area Development Programme authorities should ensure checking of the hill roads periodically since the Nilgiris is on the tourism map of India. G.N. Devaraj, Bhavanisagar Global crisisOn January 30 and 31 Vivekananda Institute of Information and Management Studies (VIIMS), Vivekananda Business School (VBS) and Vivekananda Institute of Engineering and Technology (VIET) - all women colleges situated at Elayampalayam, Tiruchengode - conducted an international seminar on ‘Recent trends in global business order - impact in Asia’. More than 1,000 students and others from various colleges attended the seminar. There were illuminating lectures by renowned people who exhorted students to imbibe values such as respect for parents and trustworthiness and stressed the importance of a strong and stable family system which had been the bedrock of Indian society for thousands of years and which softened to a great extent the impact of global economic meltdown on India. M.Vathapureeswaran, Tiruchengode No amenitiesRupa Nagar located close to Valamkulam tank bund road (Ukkadam bypass) does not have an approach road leading to the bund road. As a result, residents have to walk a kilometre to reach Trichy Road for a bus or an auto. It will help people if Kamakshi Amman Kovil Street, which extends to Rupa Nagar, is connected to the bypass road. The narrow streets and lanes of this colony are not well-metalled and very few street lights burn during night. Drainage facilities are not up to the mark and mosquitoes breed heavily. Another problem is that postal deliveries are made after 5 p.m. Requests to postal authorities to arrange for deliveries before 3 p.m. have fallen on deaf years. If the delay is owing to heavy quantum of letters the postal authorities should deploy an additional postman. M.R. Pillai, Coimbatore Water chargeCustomers are required to pay house tax for the second half of 2009, i.e. from October 2009 to March 2010, for water charge for November 2008 reading to be accepted. Why does the Corporation insist on payment of property tax much in advance? Those who can afford to pay may well do so. But what about others? S. Venkatachalam, Coimbatore LIC policyThis refers to Mr. V.G. Mahadevan’s letter on LIC’s Varishta Bhima Yojana annuity policy for senior citizens. It is possible to get premature refund of the policy under medical ground with doctor’s certificate. Details can be had from customer relations manager, divisional office, LIC, Trichy Road, Coimbatore. I have obtained refund like this. S.
