Official reviews relief measures

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: A sum of Rs. 93 crore has been allocated for repairing flood-affected roads across Tamil Nadu, according to K. Alauddin, Chief Secretary, Highways and Minor Ports Department.

After conducting a review meeting of relief measures in the districts of Villupuram, Cuddalore and Ariyalur on Satruday, he told reporters that of the 9,284 road works taken up, 6,558 were completed. The remaining would be over in a fortnight.

A sum of Rs 2.5 crore was earmarked for Villupuram district to repair roads and six minor bridges.

The works were nearing completion. Of the 31 road works taken up in Kallakurichi taluk, 26 were complete.

Mr. Alauddin said that in Ariyalur district, works were progressing at a slow pace.

Of the 118 road works taken up, only 27 were completed. He directed the officials to expedite the works.

He also noted that the estimate for the Paiyur high-level bridge at Villupuram was revised. Earlier, the estimate was put at Rs 9.8 crore. But no contractor evinced interest in the project. Therefore, the estimate had been revised. He hoped that the work would commence in two months.

Mr. Alauddin said that there was delay in widening the road between Villupuram and Thirukkoilur because it involved removing electric posts and paying compensation to the departments concerned. However, in another fortnight, the entire stretch would be completed, he said.

Chief Engineer of Highways Department Hariraj, Superintending Engineer Venkatesan and District Revenue Officer C. Kadhiravan were present.

Corrections and Clarifications

(A report "[Tamil Nadu] Official reviews relief work" (February 9, 2009) gave the designation of Mr. K. Allauddin as Chief Secretary, Highways and Minor Ports Departments. It should have been Principal Secretary, Highways and Minor Ports Department (formerly Highways Department). The Chief Secretary is Mr. K.S. Sripathi.)
