Situation peaceful in Rajasthan town

Special Correspondent

Five RAC contingents, additional police force deployed in the area

Shops were opened in the town

Probe to be over within 30 days

JAIPUR: The situation in Sidhmukh town of Churu district in Rajasthan – where one person was killed in the police firing on a violent mob – was peaceful on Sunday. The body of the victim, Dewan Singh Cheepa, was cremated after the administration handed it over to his relatives following its post-mortem.

According to the police sources, shops were opened in the town and the situation was under control. The protesters allowed the administration to conduct the victim’s autopsy after their demands for relief and a probe were met.

Dewan Singh was killed and seven others were injured in the firing at the police station in Sidhmukh on Saturday when an unruly crowd allegedly attacked the police and tried to set the building on fire. The mob was protesting against the recent murder of a local Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Virendra Singh Nyangali.

The police sources said that five contingents of Rajasthan Armed Constabulary (RAC) and additional police force had been deployed in the region as a precautionary measure. The State Government has shifted Churu Collector Bhaskar A. Sawant and Superintendent of Police Hinglaj Dan and asked them to wait for their new posting orders.

They have been replaced by Krishnakant Pathak and Vipin Pandey, respectively, who were asked to join immediately.

Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, acting swiftly on the first police firing incident in his new regime, has announced a relief of Rs.5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs.1 lakh each to the seriously injured and Rs.25,000 each to other injured persons. He also approved Government job to a dependent of Dewan Singh.

The official inquiry into the violence at the Sidhmukh police station will be conducted by Bikaner Divisional Commissioner Pritam Singh, who will submit his report to the State Government within 30 days.
