“State, Centre doing best to help Tamils”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Led by Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin, leaders of various political parties on Sunday took out a rally in the city under the banner of the Sri Lankan Tamils Welfare and Rights Forum, demanding a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

Congress Legislature party leader D. Sudarssanam, Congress MP J.M. Haroon, Electricity Minister Arcot N.Veeraswami and Indian Union Muslim League leader K.M. Kader Mohideen were among those who participated.

The rally started from the Munroe statue and culminated at Chepauk. The participants raised slogans against the killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka and demanded a political solution to the ethnic crisis.

Addressing the gathering from an open jeep, Mr. Stalin said though the DMK government and the Congress-led UPA government were doing their best to help the Sri Lankan Tamils, some leaders were politicising the issue and indulging in a smear campaign against the two governments.

Recalling the resolutions adopted in the Assembly urging the Central government to intervene and stop the war, Mr. Stalin said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had always been in the forefront to find a solution to the problems of the Sri Lankan Tamils. he said.

Meanwhile, Mr Karunanidhi in a statement said he was not upset by the diatribe of the leaders of the other camp formed in support of the Sri Lankan Tamils.
