Kalyan’s u-turn

If Kalyan Singh deserves to be castigated for his u-turn on the Babri Masjid demolition, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh needs to be taught a lesson by the electorate. Their coming together exposes their opportunism. It was the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister who stirred the hornets’ nest in 1992, for which the nation continues to suffer till date.

His overture to Muslims — that he owns moral responsibility for the December 6 Babri Masjid demolition — is only a survival tactic. He is least remorseful about the bomb blasts triggered by terrorists since 1993 to avenge the Babri Masjid demolition.

The blooming friendship between Mr. Mulayam Singh and Mr. Kalyan Singh is a classic example of opportunistic politics. The saffron hero who scripted the demolition of the Babri Masjid cannot be forgiven just because he has owned responsibility for it after 16 years. The latest development has eroded ‘Maulana’ Mulayam’s stature as a secular leader. He has indeed made the task of his arch rival and U.P. Chief Minister Mayawati — of wooing the Muslim voters of the State — easier.

Mr. Kalyan Singh, who spearheaded the Babri Masjid demolition in Ayodhya, has suddenly done a volte face, that too after 16 years. I wonder whether he has saved the apology for the riots which followed the demolition for some other occasion. My advice to Mr. Singh is he should concentrate on better issues. Muslims can see through his pre-poll gimmick clearly.

Aligarh

Political leaders like Mr. Kalyan Singh are attracted to power like the sunflower is to the sun. They want to enjoy power at any cost.

It is for the people to rise to the occasion and elect leaders who can lead the nation in the right direction.

Karimnagar
