dated February 9, 1959: Congress President

Shrimati Indira Gandhi, the newly elected Congress President, took charge of her office formally on February 8, at a simple ceremony held in the A.I.C.C. office in New Delhi. Shrimati Gandhi declared that she would do her best to implement the socialist pattern of society aimed at by the Congress with determination. While there was no new programme for her to draft, she would carry out with vigour the existing programme for the party without looking back. The new President appealed to the breakaway elements of the Congress to come back into its fold and work unitedly for the cause of national advancement.
