dated February 9, 1959: Territorial integrity

Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, India’s Defence Minister, addressing a mammoth gathering assembled at the open session of the INTUC in Dibrugarh on February 8, said that India had great friendliness and admiration for the people of Pakistan and wished them the best of luck in their affairs and efforts for development. Mr. Menon added that India had a kind of Government and social structure which would never allow a dictatorship of any form to creep in.

Referring to the country’s defence, Mr. Menon said that India would not allow any foreign power to violate her territory or threaten her internal security. “The whole of this country will stand as one man against any such aggression”, he declared. Dictatorship, he said, sprang up in those countries where people were not allowed or trained to understand democracy. It was here that trade unions had a great role to play. Trade unions were fighting for political independence of such people.
