Fairs to help in marketing coir geo-textiles in world market

Special Correspondent

KOCHI: V.S. Vijayaraghavan, Coir Board Chairman and former MP, and U.S. Sarma, Director, Central Coir Research Institute, left Kochi on Sunday to participate in the annual conference of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA), taking place at Reno Nevada, U.S., from February 9 to 12.

The conference, taking place in the context of the International Year of Natural Fibres, assumes importance as it is the world’s oldest and largest association devoted to helping its members and participants solve the problems caused by erosion. The IECA is represented by an estimated 3,500 members, including those of its Indian chapter, which specialises in storm-water management and natural resource protection. India’s competitors in the field include Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea and China. The Coir Board and exporters from the country will participate in an exhibition connected with the conference that will provide an opportunity for the country to display natural fibre products, such as coir geo-textiles, in place of synthetic geo-textiles, which has a dominant place at present, at an international level to enhance its export prospects in the global market.

Mr. Vijayaraghavan said the participation at the conference and exhibition was part of the efforts of the Coir Board at increasing India’s coir geo-textile product exports from 2 per cent to between 5 per cent and 10 per cent of the 1,400 million sq m world market in the coming years.

Mr. Vijayaraghavan will also participate in a fair in Moscow from February 17 to 20. Dinesh Rai, Secretary, Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, is also participating in the fairs.
