Jayalalithaa not to celebrate her birthday

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced that she would not celebrate her birthday in view of the untold miseries the Sri Lankan Tamils faced. Her birthday falls on February 24.

In a statement here, she called upon her partymen not to visit her. Instead, they could organise various assistance programmes for the poor.

The people of Tamil Nadu had taken an anti-LTTE stand after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and the AIADMK took a similar line. “We will never support the LTTE,” she said.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said the AIADMK was for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka.
