Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Church of South India-Diocese of Madras organised a prayer rally here on Sunday for peace in Sri Lanka.

“We are deeply concerned about the escalation of violence in Sri Lanka and the immense distress that the Eelam Tamil people are undergoing,” said Bishop V.Devasahayam of the Church of South India-Diocese of Madras.

The members from 160 pastorates and 1,000 congregations, schools, hospitals and other institutions of the Church participated in the rally.

“The Church of South India-Diocese of Madras wants the Government of Sri Lanka to immediately stop killing of Tamils in the island nation,” Bishop Devasahayam said.

Expressing concern, the meeting prayed for the cessation of hostilities and protection of the lives and property of the Tamils in Sri Lanka. “We request the Sri Lankan Army and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to immediately stop the war and to protect the lives of two lakh people in the war zone,” said D.C. Premraj, one of the organisers of the rally.
