CHENNAI: Carnatic vocalist Sulamangalam Jayalakshmi, of the Sulamangalam Sisters, was felicitated in an atmosphere of piety that perfectly fit the occasion of Thai Poosam.
The Sulamangalam Sister who was accompanied by Sulamangalam Murali gave a bhakthi-filled rendition of the Kanda Shasti Kavasam.
The base-octave rendition had the audience at the PS Senior Secondary School auditorium revisit the mythology around Lord Muruga on Sunday.
In her short acceptance speech that followed, Ms. Jayalakshmi prayed for peace in Sri Lanka and credited rasikas for all her musical achievements. Scholar Suki Sivam remarked that Ms. Jayalakshmi’s rendition of the Kanda Shasti Kavasam was the best possible alternative to paying a visit to Palani –one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga in Tamil Nadu.
“If M.S.Subbulakshmi is synonymous with Venkateswara Suprabhatham, so are the Sulamangalam Sisters with the Kanda Shasti Kavasam,” he said.
Earlier, M. Murali, managing director, Sri Krishna Sweets, honoured the vocalist.
