There are no bus services from St. Thomas Mount Railway Station to Puzhuthivakkam via New Colony (Adambakkam), Brindavan Nagar, Mahalakshmi Nagar, Lakshmi Nagar, Balaji Nagar.
Autorickshaw drivers at the station demand exorbitant fare - Rs.40 to Rs.50 for a distance of three or four km.
In Tiruchi, share autorickshaws ply from the Tiruchi Central Bus Stand to various places. Licence has been issued to them and they collect uniform fare - only a couple of rupees more than bus charges for a distance of eight to 10 km.
Similarly, licence for share autorickshaws may be issued between the St. Thomas Mount station and Puzhuthivakkam.
This refers to the news item, ‘Wares, ads galore; where’re pavements?’ that appeared on the pages of The Hindu dated January 28.
Corporation authorities have become silent spectators to encroachments all over the city. Even highway authorities seem to be least worried as shops are allowed to function on New Avadi Road near the Slum Clearance Board tenements in Gandhinagar, Ayanavaram (Ward 55), resulting in traffic snarls. The pavement in front of Institute of Mental Health on Medavakkam Tank Road, Kilpauk, has been encroached upon . Apart from this, Konnur High Road and Chennai Tiruvallur High Road are also shrinking, thanks to encroachments.
Two bridges in Periar Nagar and Chakravarthi Nagar, which connect Ayanavaram and New Avadi Road, are invariably used as unauthorised parking space by vehicle-users. Many persons also use the space as an automobile garage.
Will the authorities concerned clear the encroachments before the Padi grade separator project is implemented by the NHAI?
Postal service is not as efficient as what it used to be. Letters and M.O.s are delayed beyond the normal time. Courier services, though costly, seem to be delivering the goods and many people are gradually avoiding postal services. I request the authorities concerned to look into the delays and set things right at the earliest. This will be a better idea than introducing seven-day services.

The suburbs of Chennai, Madipakkam, Ullagaram, Puzhithivakkam and Nanganallur lack good roads. Only very few roads have been concretised in Madipakkam. The important link to Tambaram, Medavakkam Main Road near Keelkattalai bus terminus, is in a pathetic state. It is full of potholes and craters with rubble all over. It is totally unmotorable. Even patch work has been done here in bits and pieces. The stretch near St. Thomas Mount too has deep cuts across the main road, which remain unattended to, putting two-wheeler riders at great risk.
The condition of Madipakkam Main Road, where there are marriage halls, shops, school and banks, is worse. One can find debris, stones and rubbles all over the area. The road also has several pits and has been like this for quite sometime. Moovarsampet road, though concretised some time back, has worn out badly and needs repairs immediately.
The road in MMTC Colony in Nanganallur is full of potholes and craters. Many interior roads are unfit even for the use of pedestrians.
I fail to understand why such vital roads are not repaired.
The government has approved proposals for Rs. 1,200 crores or so for drainage schemes. So far, the expenditure on stormwater drains has been very productive. Priority should be on widening and streamlining flood channels such as Virugambakkam, Otteri Nullah, K.K. Nagar, Choolaipallam channel, etc.
Structural and hydraulic designs by a proper design branch is needed to ensure proper functioning of the system.

This is in reference to the article on road discipline that appeared in The Hindu dated January 2.
Vehicles such as vans, mini vans, autorickshaws, two-wheelers, tractors and four-wheelers are being parked all over the city roads. They don’t seem to bother if it happens to be a main road, interior road or a bylane. Owners of the vehicle may live somewhere nearby and park the vehicle on the road for two or three days continuously. In many cases, it may be from Friday evening to Monday morning. When questioned about such parking, their reply is that they pay road tax. I wonder if this is a legally valid argument.
Roads should not be used for parking vehicles. House owners seem to be bothered least about such parking. Inconvenience is often caused to house-owners from the lower middle class. Many of them remain silent because of fear.
Some time ago, there was a move by the Director General of Police to curb such menace. For reasons unknown, it did not see the light of the day. I request the authorities concerned to do the needful and curb this menace.
Parking has been difficult in the Western side of Mambalam Railway Station for the past several years. Consequent to the Broad Gauge conversion, the volume of rail traffic has increased manifold whereas the space for parking has not increased. This is despite the availability of land with the Railways. Recently, some development work was undertaken, which has been only to the extent of breaking boulders. This has decreased the space and made parking more difficult.
Adding to the trouble, a well laid-out cemented parking area near the staircase on the western side, which catered for users of the booking counter and people who parked vehicles for a short duration up to two hours, was closed. The parking fee for a two-wheeler was, till recently, Rs. 3. It was hiked to Rs. 4. The charges for the bicycle has been hiked from Re. 1 to Rs. 2.
A railway season ticket from Mambalam to Beach costs Rs. 234 for three months. Assuming that a person travels 25 days a month for the three months, he has to shell out Rs. 300 as parking fee.
Is it not unfair on the part of the authorities to charge such hefty sum and still not provide good service?

West MambalamRain relief yet to come
Rain relief for MKB Nagar in Vyasarpadi area (Corporation Zone III) was paid to people in Mullai Nagar, SM Nagar, East/ West Cross Streets in MKB Nagar, Chennai 600039. People living in the centrally located Central Avenue were ignored. Areas of the east, West Cross Roads in the north, Mullai Nagar in the east, areas in the west and in the north of the Central Avenue, alone were covered. There is no justification for ignoring the central place in MKB Nagar.
People in the Central Avenue recently filled forms about their family card details for verification/ payment by the officials concerned.
However, no action has been taken for payment of the rain relief.
