Trade pact likely during Pranab’s Dhaka visit

Special Correspondent

New Delhi: Though a resolution of India’s long-standing demand for operationalising transit rights for the north-east through Bangladeshi territory is still some way away, the Indian side is hopeful of generating greater ‘convergence’ with Dhaka during External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to the country on Monday.

In formal terms, two texts will be signed — the renewal of a bilateral trade agreement and a new Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement.

On terrorism, the other issue that Indian officials tend to raise during all high-level visits to Dhaka, a piquant situation has arisen following speculation in the Pakistani media that investigators in Islamabad are likely to pin the blame for the Mumbai attacks on the Harkat-ul-Jihad Islam Bangladesh (HUJI-B).
