dated February 10, 1959: SEATO and U.N. Charter

Mr. Pote Sarasin, during a television interview in Washington on February 8, said that he felt the collective defence under the South-East Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO), of which he is Secretary-General, had deterred aggression in the area. He said the treaty had created political stability in South-East Asia. He rejected a suggestion that the recently installed military dictatorships had done away with freedom. He said: “The object (of SEATO) is to resist armed aggression and to counter subversion. That means that it will bring stability and safety, and sovereignty to the countries.
