Sri Lankan crisis

* * *

The article “The moment of truth for the LTTE” (Feb. 5) exposed the true colours of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which is responsible for scores of killings in India and Sri Lanka. It is unfortunate that some political parties in Tamil Nadu view them as part of a liberation struggle. By rescuing the Tigers in 1987 from the Sri Lankan security forces, India paid a heavy price in 1991 — when the LTTE assassinated Rajiv Gandhi. The people of Tamil Nadu can never forget the gruesome murder committed on their soil. The pro-LTTE parties in the State should be dealt with strictly.

G. Ramachandran,

According to media reports, about 200,000 civilians are caught in the war zone in Sri Lanka. It has also been reported that the 48-hour deadline declared by Colombo for the release of civilians was utilised by very few people. The Sri Lankan army has accused the LTTE of using the civilians as a human shield. The government should announce a ceasefire. More important, it should give wide publicity to it through radio and pamphlets.

The political parties in Tamil Nadu which claim that they have direct access to the LTTE must persuade its leaders to allow the civilians to move out to safe zones.

It appears that LTTE chief V. Prabakaran is refusing to see the writing on the wall. The whole world, except for a few Tamils here and there, is fed up with his terror tactics.

Time is running out for the LTTE to give up arms, surrender and settle the issue with Colombo.

Comdt G.V. Mathew (retd.),

Thiruvananthapuram
