Letters to the Editor
The editorial “Hindu Taliban” (Feb. 7) deserves praise for condemning the Sri Ram Sene’s proposed action plan of disrupting Valentine’s Day celebrations. The outfit has openly supported the Malegaon blasts accused, justified its attack on women in a Mangalore pub and threatened to take illegal action against couples celebrating Valentine’s Day. Yet the Karnataka government has taken no step to ban it. P. Abinandhan, Neyveli The cartoon (Feb. 9) has tellingly exposed the hypocrisy and irrelevance of moral policing. The message is equally applicable to BJP leaders who have raked up the Ram temple issue when the country is grappling with so many pressing problems. What should be of concern to the common man is that in the heat generated by such irrelevant issues, the problem of livelihood is getting erased from the nation’s consciousness. Manohar Alembath, Chennai The Sri Ram Sene opposes everything that the Indian culture stands for — assimilation of influences, tolerance of practices and views, and peaceful coexistence of people of varied ideological, religious and cultural hues. It is a matter of shame that the group gets away with its ways. The complicity of our leaders is visible in their silence. Ramya Kumar, Chennai Why are the media giving the Sri Ram Sene and its acts huge publicity? It has now become the strategy of minor parties and outfits to get publicity by indulging in criminal acts. Instead of repeatedly airing an incident, the visual media should allot time for follow-up of the news. Sirajudheen Nellur, Kozhikode
