Corrections and clarifications

  • A sentence in the penultimate paragraph of a report “Rajnath raises Hindutva pitch” (February 8, 2009) was “… This was seen as the BJP’s attempt to quickly endorse what Congress president Sonia Gandhi reportedly stated recently and to which the party spokesperson responded by saying war should not be used as a toll for winning an election.” The right word is “tool”.

The seventh paragraph of a report “BJP to focus on ‘appeasement’ policies of UPA” (February 7, 2009) mentioned “abrogation of Article 356 of the Constitution giving a special status to Jammu and Kashmir.” Article 356 deals with the imposition of President’s Rule in a State. It should have been Article 370, which relates to the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.

  • In a report “MLA’s daughter kidnapped, freed” (February 7, 2009), the name of the CPI (M) MLA from Manjeshwar (Kerala) was given as Mr. C.K. Kunhambu. It is C.H. Kunhambu.

  • The article “India: challenges in agriculture” (Editorial page, February 7, 2009) was based on a “Millennium Lecture” that Dr. David Malone delivered at the M.S. Swaminathan Foundation in Chennai on January 23, 2009. The author note incorrectly mentioned it as “millennial” lecture on January 23, 2008.
