MADITSSIA seeks satellite city

Spanning 1,000 acres near Madurai airport; submits memorandum to State

MADURAI: Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (MADITSSIA) has called for establishment of a satellite city — Greater Madurai — spanning 1,000 acres near Madurai.

It said that a Madurai city development agency must be created for this project.

A memorandum containing these demands was handed over to Electricity Minister and Commercial Taxes Minister during a pre-Budget meeting held at Chennai by vice-president N. Somasundaram and treasurer V.S. Manimaran.

“Land is available on Aruppukottai Road near Madurai Airport. With air connectivity, the satellite city could be established there,” said Association president P.T. Krishnamoorthy.

The area is dry land with little farming activity. The agency should adequately compensate the land owners, he said.

Expedite bridge work

The association called for expediting construction of Sellur-Thathaneri Bridge to ease vehicular traffic.

It requested the State Government to immediately release the grant of 25 per cent subsidy for generators.

Tourism project

The members wanted an integrated project to maintain major tourism spots in the southern districts to attract more tourists.

All the incentives announced for the small industries sector by the State Government must be disbursed immediately, they said.

In order to create new avenues for marketing the products manufactured by the small industries sector, a permanent convention centre must be constructed in Madurai at the earliest.

Control yarn price

The association said that the price of yarn had risen a lot due to cotton export.

The State government must take adequate measures to control its price by subsidising yarn.

Such a move would benefit the textile sector, particularly hand-made textile producers, they added.
